Preston Bus Station RIBA Competition

In 2015 Joseph Boniface Architects entered an RIBA competition to design a new Youth Zone within the grounds of the brutalist Preston Bus Station.

The existing Grade II listed building features a layered concrete banding spanning some 100 metres to the two main elevations. An approach was required which would retain the visual impact of the bus station facades whilst enabling the bus station to remain functioning once complete.

Our approach was to create a number of single storey buildings which would protrude out from the building into the car park in front. In between these spaces, sunken five-a-side football pitches, skate park, landscaped gardens and break out space is accommodated.
